Cellers d’en Guilla

The rooftop of Cellers d’en Guilla is a great vantage point to observe the Tramuntana winds.

History

Marti Valles came to Emporda with his wife after being the head winemaker at a vineyard in Penedes for just under two decades. They fell in love with the area in Rabos and acquired vineyards and a spot in Delfia which had a several hundred year old home. They decided to build a new modern winery building around the home, and saw the opportunity to create an amazing rooftop experience with 360 degree views of the entire Emporda plains and the Pyrenees. Today, they make wines from indigenous vines which are 30 to 50 years old. Since 2006, they have been making award winning wines expressing the true nature of their terroir.

The Wines

The team at Cellers d’en Guilla from the beginning has always done innovative interpretations of their wines, which has garnered many international awards, including gold medals for their Magenc, silver for their Rec Debrau, best rosat in Catalunya in 2015, and more. They have received international acclaim for their “aperitif” wine, Sol i Serena, which is Grenache aged in glass jars in the sun, to create a dessert wine which is reminiscent of a sweet wine, combined with a “ranci wine” in flavour and scent.

The Land

With vineyards in the plains of alt Emporda, Cellers d’en Guilla works with red Grenache, white Grenache, “grey” Grenache indigenous to the Emporda region, Macabeu, and Carignan. The grapes with which they work are upwards of 50 years old giving a great quality and flavour of the region in all their wines.

The Winery

The winery of Cellers d’en Guilla is a true combination of modern building techniques while maintaining the history of the ancient masia it surrounds. The ancient masia makes up the reception area and a beautiful tasting room, while surrounding it is the fermentation and barrel rooms, carefully maintained and temperature controlled. The winery, as mentioned, features and AMAZING roof top where they host music events, tasting events, gastronomy events, and have it available for private corporate events as well. On a case by case basis, Cellers d’en Guilla does have private rooms for overnight stays, but they are subject to availability.

The Tour

Cellers d’en Guilla offers a detailed tour, available in English, Spanish, Catalan and French. They offer three experiences outside of the normal tasting, discovering the secrets to their Rose wine, how they make their sweet wines, and an historic architecture tour. Plus their normal tour offering has you taste one wine for 7€, three wines for 12€, and tasting with tapas for 17€.

Secret Tip

If you can have your tasting with tapas on the roof, it is absolutely a spectacular experience. It’s important to ask for the opportunity when you book your tour, and it’s not always an option, depending on weather and time of year. You can also watch our blogs for updates on when they do special events.
