Mas Vicenç

History

In 1953, the Ferré family took possession of the land and a simple farmhouse just outside of Cabra del Camp on the way to the Poblet monastery. The Ferré clan began with viticulture, and were strong members of the local agricultural cooperative that also produced wines. Four generations later, In 2005, inspired by his studies in France and in Priorat, Vincenç Ferré went to his family, and said, “Why don’t we make our own wines while still participating with the cooperative?” His mother and father, loved the idea, and his brother Xavier, began his studies as a sommelier to compliment his brother’s winemaking interest. Today, Mas Vicenç has claimed many awards and much recognition for re-inventing the local wine traditions by fusing historic techniques with modern innovations, and all four are actively involved in the winery business.

The Wines

Mas Vicenç has reds, whites, a rose, a sweet wine with an interesting story of its origins, plus they also have honey and olive oil, all made from their own lands. Vincent, the winemaker, plays with traditional Catalan and French techniques, plus has done something very special with an oak-aged Chardonnay.

The Land

The vineyards are in a unique area as it is on the northern edge of the DO Tarragona, on the southern border of Conca de Barberà, and to the east is the mountainous area of Alt Penedes in DO Penedes. Mas Vicenç has picturesque vineyards surrounding their winery, which are known as some of the best Nordic walking land in Catalunya. Plus, Mas Vicenç also has vineyards at elevation, with some amazing views across the plains to the south.

The Winery

The winery complex utilises the traditional farm house with much history, and they have incorporated their winemaking facilities inside, which has a beautiful internal courtyard with trees and pool that separates from the family residence where they Ferré clan still reside. Their barrel room is a gorgeous area of solitude, and there are doors on the south side of the building which can be opened up to enjoy the view of the vineyards. As a recent addition, they have renovated one of the outer buildings into a wine tourism centre, complete with full kitchen, to host events of all kinds, including corporate events, wine-related events, or team-building events.

The Tour

This is probably one of the few times where a tour listed on TripAdvisor has legitimate reviews raving about the tour. Xavi Ferré and Vincenç themselves handle all the tours (when they’re not winemaking) and to have such a personal experience means you get to have the true story behind their winemaking passion. The basic tour is 9€ for a tour and tasting. During peak season, they are one of the few family run wineries which has an open door policy to come visit and tour. They also have “Walk & Wine” calendar for the group walks (you can book HERE for all their tours including walk and wine), plus they have a Chocolate experience, a gastronomy experience with 6 wines and 6 plates, and a tour discussing the history of the winemaking monks of the region.

Secret Tip

There is nothing like have their sweet wine sitting by the pool in the inner courtyard. The story behind how the sweet wine came to be is an entertaining one, and one Xavi loves to share about his brother.
