Vins al Quadrat

If you’re looking to escape the downtown core, and looking for a little more of “authentic” Catalonia, head on the L1 Metro line to Rambla Just Oliveras and take the 3 minute walk down the heart of old Hospitalet Llobregat to Vins al Quadrat. With a top selection of unique and hard-to-find Catalan wines, plus a selection of complimentary tapas, or select one of the bottles to take home, you’ll have a great experience in English, Spanish, or Catalan conversation.

Wine Selection

The overwhelming choices here are of Catalan wines from all regions, with a selection of mostly smaller vineyards with a heavy focus on organic, natural, or biodynamic wines from true wine craftsmen. Vins al Quadrat has a modest selection of wines from other Spanish regions, plus some from the French Catalan region near Perpignan.

Additional Items Available

Everything is here is about wine enjoyment and what compliments that wine enjoyment. Local artisan meats, cheeses, breads, salads, traditional “pan con tomate” a few seafood selections are on the menu to go along with their rotating by the glass wine list, which on my last visit was shown on a giant roll of craft paper which they simply tear off for the new list to display.

Extras

Sam and Joan have a lovely, and I do mean lovely, back terrace area which is great for a nice private session outside during good weather seasons, which is basically 10 months of the year. Plus, with weekly or semi-monthly tasting sessions, you can enjoy wine with other wine lovers from the local area and from outside the country. Most of the tastings are in Catalan, but Sam is pretty proficient in English for translations on demand. 😉

Atmosphere

Welcome to kitsch Catalan with lots of handmade wood table tops, well crafted chairs, complimenting a 1930s classic Catalan architecture of the the neighbourhood. You’ll be greeted by the tapas area, before moving back into the “wine cellar” with the terrace in the very back.

Secret Tip

Sundays and Mondays are closed. Tuesday and Wednesday they’re only open a few hours. The times to be are Thursday through Saturday, and you just might come across live music Saturday nights during spring and summer.

Conclusion

If you want something more authentic, and more from the heart, where the proprietors are also the staff who have deep and well learned wine experience, this is the place for you. Not only can you enjoy a great tapas and wine session, but you can take back home with you a few bottles of something that your friends – be them local friends from the area, or your friends back home after your holiday – will probably have never heard of, but will think you’re a wine expert for just knowing about it!
